“We experienced the palpable presence of God. I must say, that is a tough act to follow.”
I have never experienced “the palpable presence of God,” and I never expect to find “God,” who has done an outstanding job of hiding him/herself from human beings. Like the Iraqi weapons of mass destruction, which everybody was looking for and never found, “God’s” only palatable presence is his perennial absence. And … criminal indifference to the slaughter of the innocents, recently of the Palestinian babies and children. I defy anybody to make sense of the dogma of a loving god and his/her subhuman heavenly indifference to the current wars in Gaza and Ukraine, only two of countless and uncountable such examples throughout all recorded history.
Even if in a billion years somebody should at last find “God,” the question nevertheless remains: What is the point of believing in such a monstrously indifferent somebody!
